Divorce Coaching for the Washington, DC Region

Looking for a divorce coach in the Washington, DC area? My practice has been anchored in Washington for years, and it still is. I work with clients across the District, Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland, and I’m a member of the DC Bar. We meet virtually, which in Washington isn’t a compromise. It’s the only format that survives two demanding calendars.

I’m Cherie Morris. I’m a divorce and conflict coach, I hold a J.D., I’m a CDC Certified Divorce Coach, and I teach other coaches as an instructor in the CDC High Conflict Divorce Coaching certification program.

Divorce in Washington has its own weather

This is a city of careful people with public lives. Washington divorces tend to involve two serious careers, a fierce instinct for privacy, and a schedule with no give in it. They also sit at the meeting point of three different legal systems, because the District, Maryland and Virginia each do divorce their own way. I’m not your lawyer and won’t pretend to be, but as a former attorney I understand the machinery your lawyer is operating, and I can help you arrive at every legal conversation calmer, clearer and cheaper to advise.

What we work on together

Some clients come to me before anything is decided, wrestling with whether to divorce at all. Some are in the thick of it and need the conflict itself brought down to a survivable temperature. Some are past the decree and want co-parenting that doesn’t reopen the wound every week. Wherever you enter, the core skill is the same: the conflict pivot, moving from reacting to responding, with practical tools for the body as well as the mind, because composure under fire is physical before it’s mental.

Whole couple, whole family

Most coaches work with one spouse. Whenever possible I work with both, and with the family system around you, because conflict lives in the pattern between people, not inside one of them. And the truth that guides everything: it’s not the divorce that harms children. It’s the conflict around it.

You won’t be doing this alone

I host Between Sessions, a national community of divorce professionals entrusted to me by Karen Bonnell, author of The Co-Parenting Handbook. When you need more than coaching, I can point you toward seasoned attorneys, financial professionals and therapists, including many who know the DC region well.
